October 27th is Johnny
Appleseed Day for the Lower School.
All Classes will participate in a special Language Arts Thematic Unit
celebrating the human triumph of Johnny Appleseed. Students will
read the story of "John Chapman, A Gentle Hero".
Students will also research the agricultural uses of apples in North
America; and learn facts about all of the states where Mr. Chapman
planted and harvested apples. Our fantastic finale will be the
celebration of John Appleseed Day at Linvilla Orchards. This will
be a very, very special Goal Party day. Parents, please encourage
your child to focus on what it takes to earn points and to remain on
level. Students must be on level to attend. We hope that all
of our students meet this very special goal.
For the first time there is a beta
version of the Green Tree School Internal Publication, "Tree Tops"
available in an online version.

experimental format and is a work-in-progress. Your feedback is

considerations.
Parents attend
Open House at Lower and Upper Schools
We
are very happy to report that the 'Open House' on Wednesday March 22,
2006 was a resounding success. In some classrooms, every child was
represented by a parent, grandparent or guardian. The children and
staff worked very hard to make sure that there was plenty of great stuff
to see. There were slide shows, poster-boards, music, art
projects, and even a live demonstration of African dancing.
Every available space was filled with all of the incredible work
that the students have done this year. The event was topped off by
a luncheon of lasagna, meatballs, and homemade banana bread,
prepared by the students in the upper school food service program.
A special thank you to all of the staff at both schools who came in
early and stayed late, working tirelessly to make sure that every
student's presentation was the best that it could be.
m Autism Every Day is a new film produced by Lauren
Thierry and Jim Watkins of October Group and Eric Solomon of Milestone
Video. The film was screened at A New Decade for Autism, a fundraising event
held May 9, 2006 in New York City, and subsequently broadcast by Don Imus on
his show on MSNBC. Click here to view film.
Green
Tree School Receives Proceeds from the 3rd
Annual Elaine Cardonick Memorial Golf Tournament
The tournament,
established by Jason Cardonick to honor the memory of his late
mother Elaine, took place on May 1, 2006 at Deerwood Country Club in
Mt. Holly, New Jersey. At the time of her death in 2001, Elaine
Cardonick was a special education teacher at Loesche Elementary
School in Northeast Philadelphia. She was a dedicated and
compassionate teacher of students with Autism Spectrum Disorders.
Not content to just teach her students by day she often went to
their homes after school hours to provide respite care for the
families. Jason had chosen Green Tree School as the beneficiary of
this year’s tournament because we are working to establish just such
a program. At the end of the tournament, a ceremonial check for
$10,000.00 was presented to Herman and Beverly.
AWARE:
Autism Walk for Awareness, Resources, and Education
On
April 2, 2006, Green Tree School participated in AWARE. Over $600 was
raised. The team included a number of staff members from all the
schools and Administration, as well as their family and friends. Green
Tree also had a booth available for interested persons to learn more
about Green Tree.
Upper
School students presented their research of Black History. From power
points presentations to music and dance performances, the students put
on an outstanding show.
