Philosophy on Learning
Our philosophy is rooted in our belief that regardless of their unique challenges and abilities every child and young adult should have the opportunity to learn the academic, social, emotional, vocational and life skills they need to achieve resiliency and succeed in their learning, living and working environments. We have worked with children and young adults with special needs since 1957, marking over a half century of Transforming Lives and Impacting Communities. GTSS provides education as well
as therapeutic and clinical support to children ages 5-21 with Autism Spectrum
Disorder and Severe Emotional Disability, whose disabilities are such that they
are unable to succeed in a school-based special education program or
participate in out of school activities.
The programs provided by Green Tree School and Services meet the needs of this population by consistently integrating active learning, social and emotional skill development and growth in self-control skills into everyday teaching moments. Learning occurs all day, every day. Learning opportunities need to be varied, with consistent instruction, and opportunities to practice and be reinforced for positive applications of skills across multiple settings. As a result, individuals experience success, grow in competence and confidence, and begin to try their newly learned skills in more challenging environments.
Green Tree School & Services provides programming and counseling that focuses on the whole child. In addition to traditional learning opportunities, therapeutic interventions include movement, music and play therapy, individual and group counseling, as well as comprehensive positive behavior support planning and related services to meet the learning needs of the individual.
Our goal is to equip individuals to find success in the least restrictive environment appropriate for each individual. We are successful when the child is successful and no longer requires GTSS level of services. Transition planning is a critical component to an individual’s education or treatment plan, and begins on the day of admission. Data drives decisions on increasing opportunities for the individual student/client. The transition plan is active, always incorporates the views and concerns of the individual and family, and only shifts to the new provider/school when the child and family feel the same level of confidence and competence in the new level of service or less restrictive environment.
